Review Summary

I purchased this filter after seeing great reviews for it on Youtube, it was consistently rated better than the more expensive filters, it was not until after the purchase that I noted in a couple of reviews that these filters although excellent are somewhat fragile, in one review it was recommended that the filter only be used in studio settings. I am still happy with the purchase, I am a still photographer that uses these filters in landscape photography often in somewhat harsh environments, mountain streams and waterfalls. Because I use this with Canon wide angle lenses I had purchased 105mm filters to go on lenses with 77mm filter threads using a step up ring to avoid vignetting, to solve the fragility problem I purchased somewhat inexpensive 105mm UV filters to protect the ND filters from the elements, I also purchased lens caps because Sigma makes a great lens cap for about $10 that fits the filters perfectly. I use a rear UV filter to further protect when not in use.

While many high-end cinema cameras today lack a built-in low-pass or IR cut filter to maximize data capture, they often require a stronger ND filter to maintain exposure, leading to infrared pollution. The Tokina 86mm Cinema PRO IRND 1.8 Filter - 6 Stops, a high-quality and reliable solution, is designed to address this common issue.
This durable and effective filter, crafted with precision by the innovative development team at Kenko Tokina, employs their groundbreaking Accu-ND Technology. This technology ensures a Neutral Density filter that expertly controls the amount of light entering the lens without any color impact, offering a revolutionary tool that stabilizes color transmittance across the visible spectrum.
The Tokina PRO IRND filter comes in two versatile styles, round and square/rectangular. The round PRO IRND filter features an ND vapor deposition coating on both sides of the glass, creating a truly neutral filter with high precision. The square/rectangular filter, on the other hand, has an ND vapor deposition coating sandwiched between two glass layers, allowing for repeated re-polishing in case of scratches, thus extending the filter's lifespan.
Unlike other IRND filters that cut the near infrared from a specific wavelength, the Tokina PRO IRND filter suppresses rather than cuts the infrared up to 1200nm, effectively eliminating infrared pollution. This method, compared to the more common cutting process, is less likely to produce unwanted color shifts, making the Tokina PRO IRND filter a reliable choice for maintaining true color fidelity in your cinematography.
