With the rise of digital motion picture cameras and digital imaging devices replacing traditional film, cinematographers are faced with the challenge of adapting to a "one size fits all" imaging device. This shift has made the use of filters, such as the Neutral Density (ND) filter, even more crucial in achieving desired results. The ND filter is essential for controlling light exposure and enhancing depth of field control, particularly in bright conditions where digital imaging devices can easily be overexposed.
Historically, ND filters made with dyes were used to manage light exposure, but these filters allowed small amounts of far-red to near infra-red light to pass through, affecting the quality and color of the image. Digital imaging devices, sensitive to infra-red (IR), require higher grade ND filters to counteract this IR pollution, which can result in unwanted color shifts and loss of contrast. For instance, greens may appear as a reddish muddy brown, and blacks may take on a magenta hue. Furthermore, infrared has a different focal length than visible light, potentially causing images to appear out of focus.
To address these issues, Tiffen has pioneered the Full Spectrum IR ND Filters. These filters are designed to provide true neutral density into the IR spectrum, correcting color shifts and maintaining image quality. Tiffen's Full Spectrum IR ND Filters extend the light transmission characteristics into the infrared region of the spectrum, making them indispensable for cinematographers using cameras like the Sony F and EX Series, ARRI Alexa, or Panavision Genesis.
Tiffen Full Spectrum IR ND Filters can also be used in conjunction with the Tiffen Clear Hot Mirror for Digital Motion Picture Cameras using a CMOS chip sensor, which does not use an internal IR Blocking filter, such as the RED ONE and SI2K. This combination effectively combats near and far IR pollution across the range.
These filters are available in various densities, including ND.3, ND.6, ND.9, ND1.2, ND1.5, ND1.8, and ND2.1. They are manufactured using Tiffen's proprietary lamination process, ensuring each effect is captured between two pieces of glass. This process allows for perfect parallelism through grinding and polishing both surfaces, providing worry-free handling for the cinematographer. Made with Water White glass, Tiffen Full Spectrum IR ND Filters offer superior quality and performance for high-definition cameras.
