With the rise of digital motion picture cameras and digital imaging devices replacing traditional film, cinematographers are faced with a "one size fits all" imaging device. This shift has made the use of filters, such as the 5.65 x 5.65" White Water Glass Full Spectrum IRND 1.8 (6-Stop) Filter, crucial for achieving desired results.
Designed to replace various film types, these digital imaging devices are highly sensitive in low light conditions, making them prone to overexposure in bright situations. The Neutral Density (ND) filter comes into play here, controlling light and providing more control over depth of field. Traditional ND filters, made with dyes, have been used to manage this issue but they allow small amounts of far red to near infra-red light to pass through, affecting the image quality and color.
Digital imaging devices, sensitive to infra-red (IR), can suffer from IR pollution, leading to loss of contrast and color, and resulting in unwanted color shifts. For instance, greens may turn into a reddish muddy brown and blacks may acquire a magenta hue. Moreover, infrared has a different focal length than visible light, which can cause your images to appear out of focus.
To address this issue, Tiffen introduced the Full Spectrum IR ND Filters, designed to provide a true neutral density into the IR spectrum. These filters extend the light transmission characteristics into the infrared region of the spectrum, making them essential for cinematographers using cameras like the Sony F and EX Series, ARRI Alexa or Panavision Genesis.
The Tiffen Full Spectrum IR ND filters allow for the use of heavier grades of Neutral Density filters needed for high-definition cameras while maintaining color balance. They can be used in conjunction with the Tiffen Clear Hot Mirror for Digital Motion Picture Cameras using a CMOS chip sensor, which does not use an internal IR Blocking filter, to fully combat near and far IR pollution across the range.
Manufactured using Tiffen's proprietary lamination process, these filters capture each effect between two pieces of glass. This allows Tiffen to grind and polish both surfaces to achieve perfect parallelism, offering worry-free handling for the cinematographer. Made with Water White glass, these filters are available in various sizes, including 4x4, 4x5.650, 5.65x5.65, 6.6x6.6, 95C, 41/2, 138mm, 105C, 72, 77, 82mm wide angle and Series 9.
In conclusion, the 5.65 x 5.65" White Water Glass Full Spectrum IRND 1.8 (6-Stop) Filter is a vital tool for modern cinematographers, helping to control light, manage depth of field, and maintain color balance in the era of digital imaging.
