Turnstile Audio Concourse Series TAC1100 Multi-Pattern Condenser Microphone
Written by Aaron Southerland:
"This mic had tight bass, clean mid-response, and a clear, open high range without being over-hyped or brittle like so many cheap mics. Plus, it came with a nice case and decent mounting hardware, all for a fraction of the price I’d expect to pay. I would be happy to use this mic in a voice-over setting for animation, video games, or feature films. "

Written by Brian Stroner:
"This microphone effortlessly captured the smooth warm tones of the voice while keeping the mids focused and the highs clean and transparent. While the recordings are well balanced, I feel the top end is slightly boosted around 10k which pleasantly added a crisp clarity without any distortion. For a mid-sized, mid-level, multi-patterned condenser mic, I’m quite impressed with the TAC700 and its performance in a post-production setting."

"For a smaller-sized, entry-level condenser mic, this little warrior pulled its weight. The cardioid recordings were clean, crisp, and forward-focused. The mid frequencies control the focus while and the top end is crisp with a boost around the 7k range. Overall, I think this is a good daily mic for podcasts, basic voice recordings, and general talkback. "

Whether you’re putting on a large event, recording a podcast, or just want your video conferences to sound better, finding the right microphone is essential. Check out all of Adorama’s different styles and types of mics right here.
Types of microphones
Dynamic microphones capture soundwaves with a thin, vibrating diaphragm, then convert those waves into electrical signals with magnetic coils. They’re durable and inexpensive, but they can be less sensitive to higher frequencies or when they’re too far from sound sources. If you want a general purpose mic for public addresses, live vocals, or to use with loud instruments, dynamic mics are your best choice.
Ribbon microphones capture soundwaves on a thin, vibrating ribbon of aluminum. They produce warmer tones, but don’t work well up close to their sound sources. Ribbon mics are excellent if you plan to mic an entire room for video work or want to capture ambient sound above a drumset or a whole band. However, they’re the least-common mic type.
Condenser microphones combine elements of both dynamic and ribbon mics by using diaphragms treated with metals for greater sensitivity. They produce amazing vocal sounds from about a foot away, and they’re great at capturing more distant sounds. For non-live recordings or for close broadcast-quality voices, choose a condenser mic.
Phantom power
Many mics, particularly condensers, require more electrical current than their tiny magnets can produce. Extra electricity delivered through mic cables is called “phantom power,” and you’ll want to make sure your connected devices can deliver it.
Microphone accessories
If you’re performing outdoors, even less-sensitive dynamic mics may need windscreens or “pop shields.” If you’re using a sensitive condenser mic for vocals, a pop shield is essential to keep moisture from your breath from rusting delicate metal parts. Don’t forget the mic cables and stands, either!
